There are only ten member countries playing for a place in the final competition from the Oceania Football Confederation and, dependant on a play off against a team from the South American Confederation, either none or one team will qualify for the final competition.
The ten teams are split into two groups of five with Australia being seeded in group one, and New Zealand being seeded in group two.
The teams in each group play each other in a round robin competition on dates and at venues still to be finalised. The winners of each group will then play in a play off home and away.
The winners of this play off will then play home and away against the team coming fifth in the South American Confederation, with the winners qualifying for the final competition in Korea/Japan.
