Springfield Football Club was first formed in 1935 and played its early years in the
Mid-Essex Football League. Starting initially with one side, a reserve side was soon
introduced owing to the success of the first team and through the mid 1950's and
early 1960's, Springfield's sides dominated the Mid-Essex Premier Division winning the
league and cup on many occasions.
This success encouraged the club to begin a youth section and here again during its
early years it was highly successful.
A third senior was introduced but during the 1970's the club hit a lean spell
although in 1979 the 1st XI again won the Mid-Essex League Premier Division
in the final game of the season against local rivals Boreham.
The club's committee had already decided prior to this success that the club would
apply for entrance to the Essex Olympian League. This application was successful and
the club entered both teams into this competition at the start of the 1980-81 season.
The clubs most successful seasons in this league were in the early 1980's although
they have always been the bridesmaid and never the bride.
In season 1981-82 the reserve team were runners up to Herongate Athletic in the
leagues Reserve Cup, and in both seasons 1982-83 and 1983-84 the first team were
runners up in the leagues Senior Cup. Season 1994-95 also saw the first team promoted,
as runners up to Great Baddow, into the Senior Division Two.
Ever since 1947 the club have played at Pollards Meadow, Church Road, Springfield,
but moves are afoot to move to new facilities at Springfield Hall Park in the near future if
the Sports Council Lottery Application is successful.
