Essex Junior Cup Success

After waiting for six seasons since our last win in the competition, the high point of the season came in the final of the Essex Junior Cup when Herongate Athletic Reserves overcame Wivenhoe Town 1 - 0 in a closely contested final.

After only one fairly eventful season with us, Becontree Heath departed to be replaced by Harold Wood Athletic and their near neighbours Upminster therefore increasing both divisions by one team.

This was a truly wonderful season for Herongate Athletic Reserves who, not content with winning the County Cup, also won our own Reserve Division Cup by beating Runwell Hospital. They were however unable to maintain their form in the Reserve Division and finished as runners-up to Runwell Hospital, all be it by only one point.

Not to be overshadowed by their Reserves, Runwell Hospital became Senior Division Champions with last seasons champions Collier Row Motor Gear finishing in second place.

Collier Row Motor Gear started the season by beating Runwell Hospital and winning the Challenge Cup, and then ended it by appearing in their third Senior Division final in four years, and coming away as winners by defeating Benfleet.

Old Chelmsfordians Reserves won the Sportsmanship award emulating their first team who had won it five years earlier.

A word of mention also for Rayleigh who became the first team since the 1970/71 season to score 100 goals in a league season.

For the second season running no representative matches were played.

Tailpiece

This was the first season where goal average was not used to decide the places of clubs with the same number of points in a division. In its place goal difference was used.
